Packaging Guidelines

Please take a moment to read these tips on how best to package your whisky to protect it during transit to MALTDAQ.

Before you start:

      1. Make sure your bottle meets our Condition Guidelines
      2. Check that you are sending the exact bottle for which your Ask has been matched (sending the wrong bottle means it cannot be verified and the sale will not go ahead).
      3. Choose a suitable strong and sturdy box into which your bottle (and any gift packaging) will fit, allowing space for lots of softening material on all sides, such as zig-zag cardboard or wood wool.
      4. If the bottle comes with any gift or presentation packaging remove the bottle so that you can wrap both separately (see below for tips on wrapping the presentation packaging).
      5. To wrap the bottle, first protect the label by wrapping your bottle in a blank sheet of paper (blank computer paper is ideal).
      6. Then wrap the bottle well in protective material designed to cushion the bottle from any impact e.g. an AirSac®, bubble wrap or a good amount of corrugated cardboard wrap.
      7. Make sure that the presentation / gift packaging is also wrapped well (see below for tips on wrapping the presentation packaging).
      8. Place some softening material in the base of the packing box and place the wrapped bottle and gift packaging inside. Make sure the bottle is placed upright in the box and is protected on all sides by the softening material (especially at the bottom, the top and around the neck) and that the gift packaging can’t bend.
      9. Check that both sit snugly and cannot move inside the packing box during transit (most damage on arrival is due to bottles and gift packaging moving during transit)
      10. Remember to include any associated brochures or tags included in the original presentation pack.
      11. Seal the box with strong packing tape and mark the box ‘FRAGILE’.
      12. Print and attach the shipping label which MALTDAQ will have sent you by email.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure the transaction reference number – the T-XXXX number – corresponds to the whisky you are sending as this is used to log the whisky against that transaction during its journey to MALTDAQ.

As different whiskies come in various gift boxes, tubes or tins here are some additional steps to consider:

Bottles in a Presentation Box which can be flattened (pushing the bottom of the empty box will usually indicate whether it can):

– Remove the bottle from the presentation box and flatten (disassemble) the box down.
– Wrap the flattened presentation box in protective material such as bubble wrap making sure it can’t bend.
– Remember to include any associated brochures or tags included in the original presentation pack, then continue from Step 3 (above).

Bottles in a rigid Presentation Box, Tube or Tin or Open Fronted Presentation Box:

– Remove the bottle and wrap the box / tin / tube in protective wrap.
– For cardboard tubes and open fronted presentation boxes it’s a good idea to place some protective material inside.
– Remember to include any associated brochures or tags included in the original presentation pack, then continue from Step 3 (above).
